Sarah Eales - Violinist, Violist, Teacher

Originally from Manchester, Sarah began her musical life as a pianist before taking up the violin aged 8. Her earliest lessons were with teachers from Manchester Music Service, and she also became a member of the Manchester Youth Orchestra which included her first foreign tour to Valencia in 1990. At the age of 11 Sarah also began learning the flute, but it was trips to the Halle Orchestra Family Concerts and watching the string sections from the balcony which convinced her that the violin was the most exciting of the three, and the one she wanted to persue the most!

After her A-levels, Sarah studied at the University of Birmingham until 2000 when she graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree. Whilst at University, Sarah developed her love of jazz and Musical Theatre, and performed in all of the University Orchestras and several smaller ensembles. After graduating, Sarah took a year out  to continue her studies with Jeremy Ballard, and gained her DipABRSM. In 2001 Sarah went to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to study violin with Lucy Gould of the Gould Piano Trio and graduated in 2003 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Music. Whilst at the RWCMD Sarah was selected to work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on the Orchestral Placement scheme. Sarah was also a section leader for the College Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra, and appeared in Masterclasses with Krzysztof Smietana and Philippe Graffin. She also performed in several chamber ensembles and represented the college at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Since leaving the RWCMD Sarah has continued to study privately with Lucy Gould, and has built up a career as a busy freelance violinist and teacher. She works with orchestras across the UK and is also much in demand as a chamber musician.

When not performing, teaching, or practising, Sarah might be seen out jogging in preparation for the Cancer Research 'Race for Life', or cycling around the Bristol cyclepaths. On days when that's just a bit too energetic, she's likely to be at home making jewellery.
